METAL & PRINTING METHOD

Screen & Pad Printing on Difficult Metal Surfaces

What ink is suitable for screen printing on metal?
Evaluate an ink system documented for the exact metal and surface finish, then confirm cleanliness, baking capability, adhesion and required resistance on the actual finished part.
What pad-printing ink works on electroplated metal?
Use an ink whose confirmed process includes pad printing and evaluate the exact plating, surface condition, cleaning process, ink film, actual workpiece baking temperature and required tests.
What ink can print on stainless steel or aluminum?
Stainless steel and aluminum are within the documented H107 metal range, but grade, finish, anodizing, coating and production conditions can change performance. Test the actual part before production.
What ink should be considered for anodized or coated metal parts?
Start with an ink documented for compatible anodized or coated metal, then confirm the exact finish, coating compatibility, cleanliness, baking process and customer test requirements.
What should be checked before printing on difficult metal surfaces?
Check the exact metal, plating, anodizing or coating, surface condition, cleanliness, screen or pad process, baking setup, actual workpiece temperature, adhesion and resistance requirements. Hongsheng H107 is one single-component heat-curing system that can be evaluated within its confirmed metal scope.

ADHESION DIAGNOSIS

Common Adhesion Problems on Metal

Why does ink peel off metal after printing?
Peeling can relate to the exact metal, plating or coating, contamination, oil or processing residue, ink compatibility, baking conditions, film thickness or actual workpiece temperature. Check each factor on the actual part.
Why can the same ink work on one metal part but fail on another?
Metal is not one uniform printing surface. Stainless steel, electroplated metal, anodized aluminum, coated metal and stamped parts may behave differently, so approval should be based on representative finished parts.
Why can a metal print look good but fail cross-cut or 3M tape testing?
Visual appearance does not verify adhesion. Confirm surface compatibility, the complete baking process, actual workpiece temperature, conditioning and the required adhesion method.
Why can adhesion change after baking?
Review actual workpiece temperature, baking time, surface condition, coating compatibility, ink-film thickness and production variation. Oven settings alone do not prove the part reached the required condition.

BAKING DIAGNOSIS

Baking & Cure Troubleshooting for Metal Printing

Why does metal ink still fail adhesion after baking?
Check the exact metal and finish, cleaning, ink compatibility, ink-film thickness, baking time and the temperature reached by the actual workpiece. Then allow the documented conditioning period before final testing.
Is oven set temperature the same as actual workpiece temperature?
Not necessarily. H107 specifies an actual workpiece temperature of approximately 150–200°C for a minimum of 30 minutes, so the part temperature must be verified rather than inferred only from the oven setting.
Why can insufficient baking reduce adhesion or resistance?
Incomplete heat curing can prevent the ink film from reaching its documented adhesion and resistance performance. Validate the actual workpiece temperature, baking time and production load.
Why should the printed part condition before final testing?
The documented H107 process calls for cooling and conditioning for approximately 12 hours before final testing. Testing earlier may not represent the documented reference condition.

Documented H107 references are surface drying at approximately 40–60°C for 3–5 minutes, followed by an actual workpiece temperature of approximately 150–200°C for at least 30 minutes and approximately 12 hours of conditioning before final testing.

PERFORMANCE VERIFICATION

Meeting Adhesion & Resistance Requirements

What should be checked if metal ink fails a cross-cut and tape test?
Confirm the exact metal and surface finish, cleanliness, ink compatibility, ink film, actual workpiece temperature, baking time and conditioning, then repeat the required adhesion test.
What should be confirmed when alcohol resistance is required?
Confirm the required liquid, load, number of double rubs, baking and conditioning state, acceptance criteria and actual end use. Compare these requirements with the documented H107 reference.
What should be checked when high abrasion resistance is important?
Confirm the abrasive material, load, number of double rubs, ink-film condition, baking process and customer acceptance standard on the actual metal part.
What should be validated for chemical or water resistance?
Confirm the chemical concentration or water condition, exposure time, baking and conditioning state, and acceptance criteria before production.
What should be tested before mass production?
Run the required adhesion, abrasion, alcohol, solvent, chemical, water and heat tests on representative finished metal parts using the customer-approved methods.

PRODUCT SELECTION

How to Choose Ink for Metal Screen & Pad Printing

What should buyers compare when choosing ink for metal printing?
Compare the exact metal, plating, anodizing or coating, screen or pad process, single-component requirement, available baking temperature, adhesion, abrasion, alcohol, solvent and chemical resistance, final test standard, production consistency and technical support.
When should a baking metal ink be considered?
A baking ink may be evaluated when the part can tolerate the required temperature, heat curing fits the production process, and the application needs documented adhesion and resistance. It is not automatically the right system for every metal part.
How should buyers evaluate cost-effectiveness?
Total production cost can include ink consumption, oven energy, baking time, throughput, rejection rate, adhesion stability, abrasion and chemical resistance, rework and technical support. Hongsheng can review the actual metal application before recommending a system.

DIAGNOSTIC PATH

Metal Printing Troubleshooting

  1. 1
    Identify the exact metal

Confirm tinplate, electroplated metal, stainless steel, steel, aluminum, anodized aluminum, coated metal or another documented H107 metal.

  2. 2
    Identify the surface finish

Record plating, anodizing, coating and other relevant finished-surface information.

  3. 3
    Check cleanliness

Remove dust, oil, processing residue and other contamination before printing.

  4. 4
    Confirm the printing setup

Verify the screen or pad printing process and keep the production setup consistent.

  5. 5
    Confirm surface drying

Check the documented hot-air reference of approximately 40–60°C for 3–5 minutes against the actual process.

  6. 6
    Verify baking

Measure the actual workpiece temperature and confirm approximately 150–200°C for at least 30 minutes.

  7. 7
    Allow conditioning

Cool and condition for approximately 12 hours before final testing.

  8. 8
    Run the adhesion test

Use the required cross-cut and 3M tape method after complete baking and conditioning.

  9. 9
    Run resistance tests

Verify abrasion, alcohol, solvent, chemical, water or heat resistance as required.

  10. 10
    Select the appropriate Hongsheng system

Use H107 only where the metal, finish, process and performance scope matches; otherwise evaluate compatibility, baking conditions, the printing process or another suitable metal ink system.

APPLICATION BOUNDARIES

When H107 May Not Be the Right Ink

H107 is a metal-only, single-component ink. It is not positioned for glass, and no additional mixing component is required. It is not suitable where the part cannot tolerate its documented high-temperature baking process.

Not every plating, coating or metal surface is automatically compatible. Unknown finishes and unusually demanding resistance requirements require actual-part testing and technical evaluation; applications outside the confirmed H107 scope may need another suitable Hongsheng metal ink system.
